Description
The purpose of this build is to provide the fantasy of being a long-range overwatch sniper while simultaneously being a powerful build of its own. The talents and weapons were chosen with a few specific goals in mind:
- High damage against priority targets from long ranges
- Repositioning options if your vantage point is overrun
- Remaining viable in melee
Here's why I chose what I did for the build:
MK IIIa Helbore
The middleground Helbore feels really good to use. It has the damage to easily 1-tap elites and specials to the head or even the body with minimal damage buffs active, and the charge rate isn't so high that you need to dedicate a blessing slot to Weight of FIre. Surgical is mandatory, as that's our primary source of ranged crits, which are super-boosted by the finesse modifiers provided by Marksman's Focus and grant nearly infinite ammo thanks to Shock Trooper. I went with Armourbane to really ensure that the next shot or 2 puts down the mauler or crusher coming my way. Moreover, it provides some support when dealing with bosses by making them take more damage from both our and our allies' attacks.
MK VII Tactical Axe
Really any mobile melee weapon can fit in this slot: Combat Knife, Dueling Sword, and even the Combat Axe if you want to sacrifice some melee defense for more offense per strike. I chose the Tac Axe for personal preference and, to keep in theme with the Helbore mark I chose, as a good middle ground between the defensive mobility of the Knife and the raw offensive power of the Combat Axe. I went with Agile to have essentially infinite dodges, and Headtaker for more power into both hordes and single targets. Serrated Blade allows for some Combat Blade bleed larp and extra damage if we need to hit and run.
Shredder Frag
While the Krak is one of the best grenades in the game, let alone the best Veteran nade, I like the Shredder's greater crowd-control potential. Being able to knock over a bunch of enemies and letting the chaff bleed out can give you a ton of breathing room that the smaller blast radius of the Krak simply can't offer. And while Smoke grenades can give you a very nice opportunity to go counter-sniping, as well as allow you to start picking off gunners that would otherwise suppress your team, the Shredder's lethality and crowd control potential makes it too versatile to ignore. Once again, I'm going with the middle-ground play, allowing this build to function in many areas outside of the one in which it succeeds. This is enhanced further by Grenade Tinkerer, Demolition Stockpile, and Demolition Team, all of which improve the Shredder and make it come back easily. The fact that this build is meant for hard-targeting elites and specialists means that Grenadier is mostly redundant, since we'll have a very high chance of getting a grenade back even before the regen timer completes.
Survivalist
This aura combined with Shock Trooper makes our Helbore have functionally infinite ammo. Even if we're not landing crits as often, such as having to spam shots, our natural role of elite- and specialist- hunting will quickly replenish that little which is lost.
Infiltrate
Other than for roleplay purposes, I went with Infiltrate because it allows for repositioning and the ability to give you time to take down a priority target. It's also good for getting a free revive if needed. Overwatch allows for the safety net of the 2nd ability charge if you exit stealth in a bad position. It's worth noting that short-handed tosses with your Shredder nades (holding right click before throwing) doesn't break your stealth. And while our base kit will already be doing so much damage, the 30% damage bonus both during and after stealth is worth mentioning.
Marksman's Focus
At this point, it's a little overkill for most enemies, but the extra finesse and rending damage when shooting at maulers, crushers, and bosses can reduce the number of shots needed to bring them down.
