The Gameplay Loop

Charge up the Helbore and snipe Specialists & Elites for a few seconds, then use your bayonet or swap to melee and kill anything around you for a few seconds, and keep alternating between ranged and melee so that Agile Engagement, Exploit Weakness, and Weapons Specialist stay up as much as possible.

Use your Shout (Voice of Command) when crap hits the fan. Throw Kraks when armor or monstrosities show up. And whenever a teammate goes down, prioritize rezzing them! That's the plan.

Melee Weapon

Choose your favorite melee weapon for this build. I like the Falchion since it slices through hordes and keeps me safe. It can also kill armored targets, although it does take a bit to do so. No matter what I'm attacking, I always charge it up first since it's very weak when it's uncharged.

Gun

The Helbore's Mark IV deals the most damage, but I hate its bayonet. The other 2 marks have much better bayonets. I actually use the bayonet a ton since it's very strong and it counts as melee damage for our talents. It's single target, but it deals a lot of damage and, most importantly, it staggers Ragers which are my biggest threat. But even then, it's only good against 1-3 Ragers at a time. If I get swarmed by them, it's over.

I've used the Mark V which charges very quickly but deals the least damage. I do like it, but I like the Mark IIIa better. It takes a little longer to charge, but it deals some nice damage. In order to speed up the charge time, I use Weight of Fire on the Mark IIIa. If you decide to use the Mark V instead, you can drop Weight of Fire and use something else, e.g. Sustained Fire for a succession of quick attacks.

Since Specialists and Elites are my primary targets, I use Flak and Maniac damage on my Helbore. I also use Surgical since I want the extra damage from crits.

Curios

I like using 2 Toughness curios and a Stamina curio. You can swap out the Stamina curio for a Toughness or Health curio if you want. But I like the extra Stamina.

I use 3x Revive Speed because having an ally down for any amount of time is a massive loss to the team. I need them back on their feet ASAP.

I use 3x Combat Ability Regen so that I can Shout more often.

The other 3 options can be whatever you'd like, and I go with 2x Gunner Resist and 1x Bomber Resist.

Top of the Talent Tree

I need Confirmed Kill because I want to get to Longshot and One Motion. Longshot is extra damage and really helps to kill Specialists and Elites who are far away. I want them dead before they can get too close. And since I'm swapping between ranged and melee constantly, One Motion makes that a lot smoother.

Iron Will is amazing with Shout since Shout will get you well above 75% Toughness. Superiority Complex is great. Field Improvisation removes corruption from the team and allows them to restock grenades. If you want, you can swap Field Improv for Withering Fire so that your Helbore shots can penetrate through more enemies. But I prefer Field Improv.

Survivalist is my favorite aura for the team. The damage one could work too, but I like not having to worry so much about ammo running out.

I need a constant supply of Kraks, so I use Demolition Stockpile and Demolition Team. Also, a single Krak might not kill a Crusher, so I use Grenade Tinkerer to really help bring them down with a single Krak.

Shout with Duty and Honour is fantastic. It really keeps your team alive. When a player has gold toughness, they don't take any health damage from bursts of damage, e.g. Poxbursters, Crushers, barrels, etc. And it works great to clear the way so that you can rez a teammate. Only In Death Does Duty End is an option if you want it. But you'll need to drop a talent somewhere to pick it up.

Bottom of the Talent Tree

Precision Strikes is all I want on the left side. The keystone on the left (Marksman's Focus) is an excellent one for the Helbore, but only if you can land your weakspot shots. I'm on console, so hitting weakspots can be, well... hit or miss. If I were on PC, I'd probably use that keystone. But I'm not.

The center section offers some great talents for damage (Bring it Down!), toughness (Toughness Boost), cooldown reduction (Tactical Awareness), and my favorite Leave No One Behind. As I said above, when someone goes down, we lose out on so much: their DPS, their mitigation, their coherency bonuses. I want them back up NOW! This talent does a ton of work and has saved a ton of missions for me. I would honestly swap it out for Shout's modifier Only In Death Does Duty End, but Shout isn't up often enough to rely on it for rezzing teammates.

The center also has the Focus Target! keystone. I used to use this one. It's really good. I like how brightly it highlights your target for everyone to see. I like the bonuses it gives. But I ended up switching to the right side keystone (Weapons Specialist) which I'll get to in a minute.

The right side is what really makes this build shine. It turns you into a melee beast. And it creates the gameplay loop of: getting ranged kills for a few seconds, getting melee kills for a few seconds, swapping back to ranged, and so on. If you follow that loop, both your ranged attacks and your melee attacks will be souped up.

Reciprocity helps with getting crits for extra damage. Desperado amps up your melee damage. Skirmisher is free damage as long as you're sprinting and sliding; and if you're playing correctly, you'll be sprinting and sliding constantly. Movement is everything in this game. Never stop moving!!

And I already mentioned Agile Engagement, Exploit Weakness, and Weapons Specialist. Keep swapping weapons and getting kills! Weapons Specialist is the oil that keeps this machine humming. All of its perks are incredible and really make the gameplay loop feel fast and fun. When I was on Focus Target! I just felt a lot slower and clunkier. This keystone makes you unstoppable. But you need to play according to its style or it won't work for you. So if swapping back and forth between weapons isn't your style... maybe take a look at my other Vet build which is all about using the Recon Lasgun to spray all of your enemies with fire!
