This build is all about abusing the Weapon Specialist ability and its modifier Always Prepared.  General way of playing:  shoot once, switch to shovel, kill 10 things or more, switch back to the shotgun, it auto reloads one shell (3.3% rounded up is 50% of the clip) and now has 100% crit, rinse and repeat.  Lots of weapon swapping, hence +50% swap speed.  If you just need to reload the shotgun, kill one thing in melee switch weapons, auto-loads one round, switch back to melee, kill one thing.  You want to try and keep two shells loaded so that you can double barrel the mutants.

Alternatively you can use the Plasma Gun, which I recommend in higher level play.  Mostly the same play style, but sometimes you shoot the Plasma Gun multiple times in a row.  The auto-reload mechanic is a lot weaker (3.3% of 100 rounded up is just 4 units of plasma), you can compensate by switching weapons more often during melee combat but it's not required.  If you end up needing to reload (which it forces you to do if the clip of the Plasma Gun is emptied), kill 10 things in melee first to get the 20% reduce reload time of Weapon Specialist.
