You can use whatever equipment you want.  The point of the build is that it is melee centric, you ping enemies that you want your servo skull to kill and it will kill them no matter how far away they are.  All you need is line of sight between your servo skull and the target.

TL;DR:
Go berserk, ping targets, block, dodge, win.

In the rare situation where there are no elites or specialists, you cannot activate your Artificer Skull.  Which means you cannot double its fire rate.  If you are in an open area with nothing but riflemen, you will more than likely experience pain if you cannot find cover.  But that's why we have the node "Ablative Motion Routines" and the extra Stamina curio.  So that you take 25% less damage while sprinting and sliding, so you can get to cover or close the distance while taking shots in the face.
