Most of your toughness will come from Mettle, which will work with cleave. In other words if your attack crits and hits 3 enemies, you will receive 15% total toughness.
It is worth noting that you can farm crits from True Aim with melee (melee attacks wont trigger the crit), so a decent strategy is to throw out darts (or revolver shots as needed) in between melee combat.Assail benefits rather greatly from DD due to its high crit and headshot multiplier, assail is also useful for getting stacks of DD. It should work well to kill anything excepting what it's typically already weak against.
