The Grey Knight Wind-slash

"We do not know what our chances of survival are, so we fight as if they were zero. We do not know what we are facing, so we fight as if it was the dark gods themselves. No one will remember us now and we may never be buried beneath Titan, so we will build our own memorial here. The Chapter might lose us and the Imperium might never know we existed, but the Enemy - the Enemy will know. The Enemy will remember. We will hurt it so badly that it will never forget us until the stars burn out and the Emperor vanquishes it at the end of time. When Chaos is dying, its last thought will be of us. That is our memorial -carved into the heart of Chaos. We cannot lose, Grey Knights. We have already won."

Justicar Alaric from" Grey Knights"

Intro

This Psyker build focuses on doing a ton of damage in melee using the new Blaze Force Sword and the incredible buffs from Scrier's Gaze. It is an absolute blast to play, as Scrier's Gaze helps mitigate some of the mobility drawbacks of using a 2h weapon. It is largely an adapted Gun Psyker build, just with a melee focus. It is, however, a massive glass cannon. You do get some defensive tools with Scrier's Gaze, but nowhere near what other melee classes get. We are not a tank! We bob and weave through enemies, chopping heads and deleting hordes or Elites in equal measure.

Weapons

Covenant Mk VI Blaze Force Greatsword — This beast is from the latest patch, and holy hell is it enjoyable to use. With easily accessible CC and single-target attack chains, you can take out just about anything with it. The Wind-Slash is also really fun and can be quite useful for creating space, staggering ranged enemies, or thinning out mixed hordes.

Why the Mk VI?

I prefer the attack pattern — simple as that. My lights are for clears, and my heavies are for single targets. This build will work well with the Mk VIII, of course! Any enjoyers of the Executioner Sword from Vermintide and Vermintide 2 will love it! The Mk VI feels more like the Greatsword from those games but with some added single-target attacks.

Stats

You can dump either Warp Resistance or Defences. Neither has too much impact on the weapon itself, so pick what you like. I dump Defences, and it works fine.

Perks

I take Flak for one-shot headshot crits on bucketheads and some horde DPS. Unyielding is mainly for the boss damage, but you could switch it out for something else if you prefer.

Blessings

Riposte is probably the best blessing here. Arguments can be made for Precognition, Wrath, and Deflector, but we will be dodging all the time, so Riposte will always be active.

Murderous Tranquility, on the other hand, is a must-have to make sure we can keep Scrier's Gaze going for as long as possible.

Godwyn-Branx Mk IV Bolt Pistol

My preferred pick to pair with this build. Slowest to shoot out of these options, but very satisfying to use. I love turning enemies into red mist with this weapon. I don't just like it for the power fantasy: It suppresses ranged enemies and can penetrate thin sheets of metal and other cover like the ones such enemies like to hide behind. For perks, I take Maniacs for one-shotting flamers and Flak for other breakpoints. For Blessings, I use Surgical for the crit breakpoints and Puncture to secure kills.

Alternatives

Zarona Mk IIa Quickdraw Stub Revolver
You know it; you love it! Arguably the best special sniper in the game. Not much needs to be said here other than using True Aim guarantees a crit after hitting 5 weak spots. Its low chamber size means a lot of reloading, though, and it has the least amount of ammo of the options I will present.
Perks: Flak and Maniac.
Blessings: Hand Cannon and Surgical.

Kantrael Mk X Heavy Laspistol
If you're looking for a good alternative to the Bolt Pistol for this build, the Heavy Laspistol is your baby. It can deal with specials at a distance, and it lets you fatten up on Disrupt Destiny stacks at range more comfortably than the Zarona or the Bolt Pistol. I find that Unyielding and Flak are the best mix for perks, but I haven't extensively tested it for any breakpoints. For Blessings, I go with Infernus and Dumdum.

Accatran Mk XII Recon Lasgun

As mentioned earlier, this is an adapted gun Psyker build, so you don’t need to make drastic changes to get the Recon Lasgun working. If you prefer a hybrid ranged and melee build, Tranquility through Slaughter is all you really need to make it work. It allows you to seamlessly transition between both combat styles. Whether you’re using the Recon Lasgun for precise weak-spot shots or switching to the Greatsword for close-quarters engagements, Scrier's Gaze keeps you in control, enabling you to effectively juggle both combat styles. I’d recommend skipping True Aim, though, as it doesn’t synergize well with the burst fire of the Recon Lasgun. Just be aware that, unless you fire in controlled bursts to conserve resources, it can be an ammo hog. I'd recommend Crit Chance and Unyielding for perks and Infernus and Headhunter for Blessings.

Curios

I don't like having to change my curios for every build or needing to collect and upgrade a bunch of different ones, so I like to keep mine universally useful.

  1. Stamina
  2. Toughness
  3. Toughness

For perks, Toughness and cooldown reduction are great. The last stat is more malleable. I like Stamina Recovery for this melee build. I wouldn't blame you for wanting to pick up Resistance Gunners, though, or whatever else tickles your fancy.

Talents

The focus of this build is to utilize the greatsword with Scrier's Gaze. To that end, we pick up a few nodes that help us do just that: Battle Meditation and By Crack of Bone are the two standouts, and I would say must-haves. If you want to, you could grab the Ability Modifier Reality Anchor, but personally, I feel we get more out of the alternative. The last one is the Keystone Modifier Purloin Providence. I don't use this as it feels too unreliable, but maybe you'll get some good mileage out of it.

That is what we can do to extend Scrier's Gaze for as long as possible, but we also want to consider what we can use to get it going again once it ends. Psykinetic Aura isn't actually an aura, but it is damn good. This is a really potent way of getting your ultimate and those of your allies to be as active as possible. The other option is the actual Aura Seer's Presence. Good for everyone on the team and great for you. I, however, like Prescience for this build more because going that route makes nabbing Anticipate easier. That and most Psykers will be running Seer's Presence so as not to double up, I run Prescience.

Our next biggest concern is survivability. Spoiler alert: you won't be very survivable! This doesn't mean, of course, that we should ignore our defenses. First up, we have a few ways to replenish toughness. Mettle starts us out fairly strong; Quietude will be great during Scrier's Gaze, and when killing Disrupt Destiny targets, it will replenish toughness as well. Something to consider is Soulstealer to get Toughness back on Warp kill. Our only Warp attack is the Wind-Slash, but man, does it feel nice to see your toughness get replenished when you slice a horde apart. Alternatively, you could free up a point for Warp Expenditure and use both it and Quietude for a steady stream of Toughness during Scrier's Gaze.

One with the Warp is the Psyker's only Toughness Damage Reduction passive, and it scales based on peril, so pretty much just in Scrier's Gaze. The Ability Modifier Endurance adds another 20% TDR. Not amazing, but at least we won't be knocked down by a stiff breeze.

Mobility is also vital for this build. To that end, the aforementioned Mettle gives us 15% movement speed, and Scrier's Gaze gives us another 20%. Lastly, you get another 20% for 2.5 seconds after killing a highlighted target.

Empathic Evasion enables us to murderize enemy gun lines, and that extra dodge from Anticipation is very much welcome.

Finally, Kinetic Deflection enables us to block with our Peril pool instead of stamina. This is particularly great when resurrecting a downed teammate.

None of the Blitzes bring much to the table, so I just picked Smite on the off chance it can save me in an "Oh shit" moment. You can go with Brain Rupture and Kinetic Flayer if you prefer, but I'd rather spend that one point elsewhere. Also, if you do go this route, keep in mind that the greatsword's push attack causes a tiny bit of damage that can proc Kinetic Flayer. DO NOT USE AGAINST POX BURSTERS!

How to Play

For the discerning Ferret:

  • Kill highlighted enemies and keep your Disrupt Destiny stacks capped.
  • Find some enemies, activate Scrier's Gaze, turn into a murder blender, profit.
  • Pick off the odd special with your ranged weapon.
  • Return to blending your enemies.
  • Use Scrier's Gaze pretty much on cooldown.
