BASICS

  • Achlys Mk VI Power Sword block + push attack for max damage. The first poke attack deals the most damage, especially on crit, it SHOULD ALWAYS LAND on enemies' head. 
  • Target Down! to restore stamina for constant push attacking with Power Sword and team sustain in Havoc. One of the most underrated talents in the game.
  • Precision Strikes the most important melee talent on Vet to hit 1-2 hit Power Sword breakpoints on many targets, it's worth going for it over other talents, even if you have to take 10% ranged damage tax node.

  • Field Improvisation not taking it in Havoc is a huge mistake. It clears corruption with medipacks if your Zealot doesn't run Beacon of Purity, you can also keep ammo crate and place it just for yourself to spam 10+ grenades against boss spam or elite spam of Havoc. This is the clutch talent in "shi- hits the fan" situations. 
  • Placing medipack when Twins spawn with Field Improvisation , just to clear them more safely, is also the best decision you can make if you play with randoms, since Twins is the main threat of many Havoc 40 quickplay runs (them or Rotten/Garden Enemies).

Grenadier one extra grenade that's guaranteed to spawn, and multiple additional grenades that may spawn add a lot to the damage and can remove whole elite armored hordes. Unlike Fully Loaded you can always fall back on it, because ammo is not guaranteed. 4 krak grenades can also stunlock all weakened bosses till they die, without a chance of attacking if you practice throwing them directly at bosses and wait for full stagger animation (AKA don't throw them too early, while the boss still stunned).

WHY DUMP CLEAVE ON POWER SWORD?

Powered light attacks are enough for horde clear with Brutal Momentum (you hit 5+ targets all the time and kill most horde enemies in 1-2 swings with damage buffs from talents), but we need to reduce Mobility penalties as much as we can, since Mobility is the main weakness of Power Sword.

But if 60% Mobility works for you, go for it.

ANTI-RECOMMENDATIONS:

  • Reciprocity is overrated and has trash uptime, especially on full stacks. In Havoc good Ogryns and Zealots will hold the horde for the team, so you have even less chance to use it against most melee enemies. You don't need crits for horde clear. Duck and Dive, on the other hand, improves your stamina regen for push attack spam even further. 
  • Serrated Blade helps only with horde clear, it brings around 10-15% additional damage if you do 70% melee, 30% ranged. Bleed scales with how many hits you've dealt to the same target, so Power Sword which is kinda slow, doesn't work great with it. It's the talent that works better with "weaker" but faster melee weapons which can spam attacks (light attack mk1 shovel, push attack knife). 
  • Agile Engagement you either shoot as Vet, or you melee. Has bad uptime and forces you into a weird playstyle, but damage buff is good, although for me personally not consistent enough to consider over other talents.

25% mutant damage perk on Godwyn-Branx Mk IV Bolt Pistol . Your job as a Vet is to kill Dreg and Scab Gunners (both flak armor in chest, and both should die in 1-2 shots with this build on Havoc 40), Reapers and Specials/Disablers with Bolt Pistol. You take 25% mutant damage to be more consistent at killing Havoc-buffed Ragers and Mutants, not against Trappers and Flamers. Trappers marked by Focus Target! die in one headshot, and Puncture helps with killing both Flamers in 2 shots, as long as you hit at least one headshot.

25% flak armor damage perk on Achlys Mk VI Power Sword . You already kill Flak enemies easily in Power Sword's powered mode with 1-2 hits. You hit Maulers in the head which is carapace (in fact, power sword can oneshot Rotten Armor Maulers marked by Focus Target! with a single poke attack). You don't need all that extra flak armor damage, while more unyielding damage never hurts.

Godwyn-Branx Mk VI Bolt Pistol the newer bolt pistol mark is objectively weaker on Vet, because it has BOTH less ammo, AND less damage. It has superior stagger to disrupt enemy Gunner backlines, but with all the extra shots you have to make in Havoc it's not worth it. Bolt Pistol MK6 is better for Zealot for more crowd control.

CURIOS:

Stamina regen for pushes/push attacks and combat ability regen are the staples for every single Darktide build.

Revive speed for clutches, but you can replace it with something else that works for you.

Gunner Resistance is HUGELY OVERRATED and not worth it, you can dodge slide 1-2 Gunners, but multiple Gunners will still kill you if you try to push them without Psyker bubble, Voice of Command etc.

21% Health, 17% toughness, +3 stamina curios. That extra health curio is important so that you don't have below 100 HP in Havoc 40. Stamina for push attacks and blocking against bosses (<- very important if you don't play with good Ogryn/Zealot player). Especially since you're spending more time in melee.
