If you do, you lose damage!  Try to keep your peril high for increased damage when you switch to your shotgun for the guranteed crit 'n' bleed. The Crucis Mk XI Double-Barrelled Shotgun Works well too 

UPDATE... The tac axe is kinda good and all but the Covenant Mk VIII Blaze Force Greatsword  and Covenant Mk VI Blaze Force Greatsword work better for carapace and blocking bullets!
