Empowered Psionics self-recharges on elite kills. BB will be enough damage to kill most base level elites in one hit (gunners, shotgunners, some ragers). For this reason, always BB elites (working backwards from the most distant to most close).The damage throughput on Ogryn and Maulers makes this an ideal counter, even given the fact you'll need to make 2 passes on damnation. This means at worst your empowered psionics should be running at 50% efficiency. Dropping the bubble also will greatly increase the damage throughput of your BB. This is particularly useful for bosses. Optimally the purgatus only ever comes out to deal with a horde. The rest of the time your ranged option is the BB and your melee option is the dueling sword or the illisi mk V.
