Duelling sword with dodge/crit is perfect at taking out hordes, surge staff for gunners/specialists/elites and even bosses.
Smite is good for CC but has miserable damage so try to only use it when it's your last resort. ie, when your back is against the wall and you have a wall of armor coming at you. Instead of using Smite to immobilize a horde for your team-mates to handle, knock them all down, quickly switch to sword and cut through them (killing enemies is always worth more than stunning them).
Surge staff is excellent at dealing high damage to mid-range targets with your charge attack and taking out snipers with decent damage on the primary M1/R2 fire. Try to ride the warp against bosses and armor to get more crits.
Drop a shield early in a fight to deal with any gunners and then build up your warp drives for a decent damage boost, don't sleep on your sword and try not to rely on smite (last resort only).
