Description
Overview
This build is highly geared towards annihilating Crushers and Maulers while still being a generally strong melee build.
Playstyle
When dealing with hordes, rely on your heavy vanguard attacks comboed with light vanguards. When big boys show up that's when the fun begins. Fully charge a heavy strike down attack (hold attack until attack releases) to delete Crushers, Maulers, and Mutants, and do solid damage to bosses.
Strengths
- Can reliably one shot Crushers, Maulers, and Mutants
- High boss damage
- Strong horde clear
Weaknesses
- Slow swing speed
- Pickaxe takes time to get used to
- Struggles against ranged enemies
Build
Overall its a pretty standard heavy melee Ogryn build. The idea is to take all the heavy melee bonuses to maximize damage while taking a few other modifiers and passives to round it all out. Below, I will go over each element of the build and go over why I use them and whether or not they're replaceable.
Passives
Vital
Heavyweight
Crunch!
No Stopping Me!
These are necessary for the build to function. "Heavyweight" and "Crunch!" give you massive damage boosts that are required to one shot Crushers. "No Stopping Me!" is necessary due to how slow the Branx is. Without it you'd constantly get your attacks interrupted.
Valuable
Lynchpin
Smash Em!
Impacable
These passives are valuable but not mandatory for the build. "Lynchpin" provides a high increase in survivability assuming you stay with your team (which you should). "Smash Em!" allows you to regain toughness while focusing on groups of Crushers and/or Maulers. Without it you're at risk of taking too much damage from other threats. "Implacable" helps a lot in horde clear. You'll end up taking plenty of hits while using the Branx, but "Impacable" combined with toughness replenishment allows you to mostly or completely shrug them off.
Replaceable
Batter
Delight in Destruction
Towering Presence
These are optional passives. They benefit the build but can be swapped out if you fancy something else. "Batter" and "Delight in Destruction" are a packaged deal. The bleed can help with hordes and the damage resistance can help as well, but you do so much damage that I'm not sure how much value either provides. "Towering Prescence" can make staying in coherency easier, which is very important. However, if your team is well coordinated, its value is diminished. It's also an expensive grab so something cheaper could be preferable.
Keystone
I've tried both "Heavy Hitter" and "Feel No Pain", and found Heavy Hitter to be better overall. The damage bonus can help hit breakpoints, depending on other damage bonuses, and with clearing hordes. The attack speed bonus is also nice and the toughness replenishment actually made me feel tankier than when I tried Feel No Pain. Feel No Pain is also more out of the way on the tree so it soaks up points. It's not bad but Heavy Hitter suits the build better.
Operative Modifiers
Take all the melee damage bonuses you can. Toughness bonuses are also good but not necessary.
Ability
"Indomitable" works very well with the build. The ability to stagger a monstrosity, knock over a horde, the attack speed bonuses, all are very valuable. You could run "Loyal Protector" if you wanted to, but I think Indomitable works better.
Aura
"Bonebreakers Aura" is a large damage bonus you almost can't go without. I wouldn't recommend changing it.
Blitz
This build is very melee focused and it can struggle with enemies at a range. "Big Friendly Rock" helps a lot in this regard allowing you to snipe problematic enemies. However, you can viably run "Frag Bomb" if you want an on demand nuke.
Gear
Branx Pickaxe
I don't think I need to explain why the build requires this.
Perks
Carapace damage is not entirely mandatory, as you can one shot Crushers and Maulers without it, but it makes it a lot easier; you really should have it. Unyielding damage is less necessary but similarly very valuable for deleting bosses.
Blessings
Thrust is absolutely mandatory. T4 is best but T3 can work if you get enough other damage bonuses. The other blessing is entirely up to you.
Rumbler
I picked the Rumbler simply out of preference. In reality any of Ogryn's ranged options can work.
Curios
I recommend running a mixture of toughness and health curios but you can easily fit in a stamina or wound curio if you really want one. As for perks, I STRONGLY recommend Gunner resistance but the other perks are complete preference.
Tips
- If the Branx feels cumbersome at first just keep using it. I didn't quite like how slow and clunky it felt. However, after using it for awhile, the weapon felt entirely natural.
- Learn the Branx's weapon combos; this weapon relies heavily on your knowledge of them. For example, you can hold block for a second to reset your weapon combo to get repeated heavy strike downs, or you can combo a heavy strike down into a light strike down, back into a heavy strike down.
- Since the crafting update hasn't come out yet your Pickaxe will be subject to RNG. Luckily, you don't need a perfect Pickaxe to one shot Crushers. Play around with your available blessings and damage bonuses to see what gets you to the breakpoints you need.
