The Surge of Havoc – Havoc 40 Electrokinetic Psyker
This build was created around a simple concept: absolute battlefield control through aggression. Rather than sitting in the backline fishing for Brain Burst procs or relying on defensive crutches, this Psyker thrives in the middle of the fight, constantly cycling critical hits, controlling entire hordes with lightning, and maintaining near-permanent offensive momentum. Every talent, weapon choice, and curio has been selected to support a fast-paced playstyle that rewards staying active, staying dangerous, and keeping pressure on the enemy from the first engagement to the last.
At the heart of the build is the Nomanus Mk VI Electrokinetic Force Staff , commonly known as the Surge Staff. I chose the Surge Staff because it provides something few weapons in Darktide can match: reliable crowd control, elite deletion, and battlefield disruption all from the same package. While other staffs excel at either damage or control, the Surge Staff does both. A single charged attack can lock down dangerous specialists, interrupt elite pushes, and spread damage through clustered enemies. In Havoc, where elite density becomes one of the biggest threats to a run, that level of control is invaluable.
The staff itself is built around critical hit scaling. Warp Nexus provides up to 20% additional critical hit chance based on current peril, while Surge grants additional critical chance and double projectiles on critical primary attacks. Combined with the weapon's base critical chance perk and Prescience , the build reaches extremely consistent critical hit rates. This is important because critical hits are not simply increasing damage; they are the fuel source that powers a large portion of the build's defensive and offensive engine.
The Catachan Mk IV "Devil's Claw" Sword serves a completely different role. I don't carry it because I need more damage. I carry it because it gives me one of the safest melee tools available to Psyker. The Devil's Claw's parry mechanic allows me to handle situations that would otherwise be dangerous for a lightly armoured class. Savage Sweep and Wrath dramatically increase cleave potential, allowing the weapon to carve through dense hordes while maintaining control. Combined with Flak and Maniac damage perks, it remains highly effective against the specialist enemies most likely to break through the lightning storm. The sword exists to create breathing room whenever enemies manage to reach melee range and gives me a dependable fallback when peril management becomes necessary.
The build revolves around Scrier's Gaze rather than Telekine Shield. This is a deliberate choice. Scrier's Gaze transforms the Psyker from a support caster into an offensive powerhouse. Upon activation it provides increased damage, increased critical chance, increased weakspot damage, toughness damage reduction, suppression immunity, and passive toughness regeneration. As the effect continues, damage continues ramping higher until reaching a massive bonus. Rather than waiting for enemies to come to me, Scrier's Gaze encourages pushing into engagements and overwhelming them before they can become dangerous.
Reality Anchor and Warp Unbound are critical components of this setup. Reality Anchor reduces peril generation and improves quelling during Scrier's Gaze, making it significantly easier to sustain offensive pressure. Warp Unbound removes one of the greatest risks associated with aggressive Psyker play by preventing accidental self-detonation during the lingering effect. Together they allow me to focus entirely on maintaining momentum instead of constantly worrying about peril thresholds.
For my Blitz, I run Smite . Many players think of Smite purely as a crowd-control tool, but in this build it serves as both control and utility. Empowered Psionics dramatically increases Smite's damage and spread potential, while Overpowering Souls guarantees a steady supply of empowered charges through elite kills. The result is a tool capable of instantly stabilising dangerous situations. When a horde, elite pack, or mixed wave threatens to overwhelm the team, Smite can halt the advance long enough for the squad to regain control. In Havoc 40, where a single bad engagement can snowball into a wipe, that capability is incredibly valuable.
Prescience was selected as the aura because it benefits both the build and the team. An additional 5% critical hit chance might appear modest on paper, but when combined with Warp Nexus, Surge, Scrier's Gaze, and various critical-hit talents, it significantly increases the frequency of critical procs. Since so much of the build scales from critical hits, Prescience becomes a force multiplier that improves both personal performance and team damage output.
A large portion of the build's durability comes from talents that convert offensive pressure into survivability. Mettle replenishes toughness through critical hits while simultaneously increasing movement speed, allowing me to remain highly mobile during combat. Empathic Evasion causes critical hits to function as temporary protection against ranged attacks, dramatically reducing the threat posed by gunner packs. One with the Warp grants substantial toughness damage reduction based on peril level, meaning the build naturally becomes tougher as its damage potential increases. Rather than relying on passive defence, survivability is earned through constant offensive activity.
Peril management is handled through a network of synergistic talents rather than a single solution. Battle Meditation provides frequent peril reduction during combat. Empyric Resolve reduces peril generation while improving toughness replenishment. Quietude converts quelling into toughness restoration, while Solidity accelerates the quelling process itself. Together these talents create a loop where managing peril also restores survivability, encouraging active resource management instead of forcing downtime.
The build also gains exceptional sustained damage through talents such as Warp Rider , Malefic Momentum , Empyric Shock , and Vulnerable Minds . Warp Rider alone provides up to 20% additional damage based on peril, encouraging me to operate near the edge of maximum efficiency. Vulnerable Minds significantly increases damage against Ogryn-class enemies and Monstrosities, allowing the Surge Staff to contribute meaningful boss damage despite being primarily a control weapon. Malefic Momentum rewards alternating between warp and non-warp kills, ensuring that both my staff and melee weapon remain relevant throughout a mission.
The curios are built around survivability and ability uptime. Toughness curios improve the effectiveness of the build's many toughness regeneration sources. Gunner resistance helps counter one of Havoc's most dangerous threats: concentrated ranged fire. Stamina regeneration improves mobility and survivability during repositioning, while combat ability regeneration helps ensure Scrier's Gaze is available as frequently as possible. Every curio contributes to either maintaining offensive momentum or surviving long enough to keep applying it.
Ultimately, The Surge of Havoc is not a defensive Psyker build. It is an aggressive control build designed to dominate the flow of battle through constant pressure, critical-hit synergy, and overwhelming crowd control. The Surge Staff locks down priority threats, Smite stabilises dangerous situations, Scrier's Gaze turns the Psyker into a devastating damage dealer, and a web of interconnected talents transforms critical hits into survivability, mobility, and sustained offensive power. The result is a Psyker capable of controlling entire engagements while dealing meaningful damage, supporting teammates, and thriving in the chaos that Havoc 40 is designed to create.
